The port city of Charleston, with a population of around 134,000, is located on a peninsula at the mouth of the Cooper River and Ashley River, both of which flow towards the Atlantic. Until 1788, Charleston was the capital of South Carolina. Today it is the administrative seat of Charleston County and the Roman Catholic diocese. The city has endless sandy beaches and many different leisure activities to offer, in addition to numerous sights from the colonial era. The region is rightly one of the ten most popular vacation areas for Americans.

Sights of Charleston
Worth seeing are the Circular Congregational Church built in 1890 and the historic rectory in Meetingstreet because of its unique architecture. Travelers can learn more about the city's history at the Charleston Museum. The oldest museum in America was founded in 1773 and is located in the Downtown Historic District. If you want to experience a typical Southern house, you should visit the Joseph Manigault House.

The historic building is furnished with furniture from Italy, France and America in the style of the early 19th century. If you are interested in the harbour and military history, the Naval Museum and Patriots Point Naval are recommended. There you can discover interesting things about the port and military history and about the engine room of military ships.

Other historical witnesses are White Point Garden with its cannons and the Fort Sumter with the landmark of Charleston, the Fort Sumter National Monument. Leisure activities around Charleston Apart from culture and sightseeings, Charleston also has miles of sandy beaches to offer, where travelers can perfectly relax from their museum visits. Many places offer canoeing, yacht charter, surfing, sailing and paddling. Beach volleyball, tennis and golf can also be played in Charleston.

Travelers who rent a rental car can take advantage of low gasoline prices while discovering the most beautiful places on the Peninsula. If you have the opportunity to visit Kiawah Island, you will find endless sandy beaches with sand dunes and an almost untouched nature with coastal forests and swamps where you can admire lynxes, white-tailed deer, sea turtles and numerous sea birds.

Enjoy life at Folly Beach

The beach section of Folly Beach not far from the city offers excellent fishing and an excellent selection of bars and restaurants. Holidaymakers and locals enjoy live music and culinary delights together. The beach also offers the best conditions for surfers on the whole east coast. A little bigger is Myrtle Beach, where there are also great restaurants for lovers of fish and seafood. In the north, the beach is also geared towards visitors who like to turn night into day. Charleston is definitely worth a visit.
