Categories: Jerusalem Israel

Anyone who travels to the capital of Israel is immersed in history. Estimated to have been inhabited since 5,000 BC, Jerusalem is one of the oldest cities in the world. A magical energy dwells within this place on the edge of the desert and at an altitude of 800 meters.

Holy city
Every year hundreds of thousands of people visit one of the more than 5,000 churches, synagogues and mosques in Jerusalem. The Old City is surrounded by a twelve-meter high city wall and is divided into Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian quarters.

Temple Mount

Once the Temple Mount was considered a wonder of the world. Today, visitors experience it as a place of peace and quiet in the middle of the Old City of Jerusalem. From the top you can see the spacious Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Dome of Chains and the Dome of the Rock, whose dome is made of around 80 kilograms of gold.

Wailing Wall
Part of the wall around the Herodian temple still exists. Between the stones, the believers insert pieces of paper with prayers and wishes. As part of a guided tour, you can visit the foundations of Jerusalem in the almost 500-meter-long Wailing Wall tunnel.

Archaeological Park
Next to the Temple Mount is the Archaeological Park. There you can discover the traces from the different epochs and follow the paths of the pilgrims to the temple. The many finds are explained in films and audio reports.

Church of the Holy Sepulchre and Church of the Redeemer
The Church of the Holy Sepulchre consists of 30 chapels. Thus it is claimed by six different denominations. It is assumed that this is the place of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Not far away is the Church of the Redeemer, which is fascinating not only because of its white limestone but also because of its many colourful windows. From the tower you have a unique view over the old town.

Knesset
We also recommend a visit to the Israeli parliament building, with mosaics and tapestries by Marc Chagall inside. From the gallery you can listen to a political debate.

Israel Museum
The Israel Museum is located in the New City of Jerusalem. Scrolls and encyclopedic collections tell the history of the country. You can marvel at ancient Jerusalem on the basis of a spacious model. The oldest Bible manuscripts in the world can also be viewed here.

Popular with locals and tourists alike is the large vegetable market in the center of Jerusalem. On the more than thousand stalls, baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and meat are sold. After sunset, you can enjoy the natural atmosphere and vibrant colors with a beer and get to know the people of this special city.
