Festa del Redentore

Reminds the inhabitants of Venice of the end of the plague

Categories: Venice Veneto Italy Festa del Redentore

On the third Saturday in July Venice celebrates the Festa del Redentore every year. Translated into German, the festival is called the "Festival of the Redeemer". The Festa del Redentore reminds the inhabitants of Venice of the end of the plague in 1557. One of the most devastating epidemics of the time cost the lives of more than 50,000 Venetians. The painter Tiziano Vecellio, who is still famous today, also fell victim to the plague. The Festa del Redentore, with its long history, is one of the oldest festivals in Venetian history. A great firework display over the water in the late evening is the highlight of this festival. Venetian boats, on which visitors can enjoy food and drink, provide a very special view of the impressive 60-minute fireworks. On the following Sunday, the Guidecca Canal is used for thanksgiving pilgrimages and holy processions. The end of the celebrations takes the form of a service in a church on the island of Giudecca.
