The journey to Virginia Beach
If you arrive by plane, it is best to take a direct flight from New York City, Washington D.C. or Philadelphia to land at Norfolk International Airport. Since there are no public transportation connections, it is advisable to charter a rental car.
Shuttle transportation and cabs are also available at the airport to get to Virginia Beach. There are also several car routes to the city on the east coast. Boston, Washington D.C., New York City, Philadelphia as well as Baltimore and Atlanta are within easy reach. In addition, intercity buses, the so-called "Greyhounds", can also be used to reach Virginia Beach.
Cultural Heritage and Modern Art
You can take a trip back in time by visiting the houses built by the first inhabitants of the city. The "Adam Thoroughggood House", for example, dates back to 1680 and many other buildings give you a unique insight into the former American life of Virginia Beach.
The "Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art" (short: MOCA) offers a completely different cultural experience. Here you can see sculptures, paintings and photographs of contemporary artists. And if you want to become creative yourself, visit one of the workshops offered.
Explore the city
After so much history and culture, anyone looking for varied shopping opportunities will quickly find what they are looking for in Virginia Beach. There are modern shopping malls with boutiques, souvenir stores and art stores as well as rustic farmers' markets where local products are sold.
In addition, numerous bars, pubs and restaurants have settled in downtown Virginia Beach. The cuisine is characterized by its proximity to the sea. Seafood such as fish, crabs, mussels and fresh oysters are available in all imaginable variations.
Active recreation in Virginia Beach
The city has a 56 km long coastline. More than 80% of it consists of white sandy beaches. The "Guinness Book of Records" has listed it as the "longest pleasure beach in the world". The 5 km long beach promenade is a special attraction for many guests in the summer months.

In addition to the 11-meter-high statue of Neptune, the many events with live music are particularly attractive. And also those who want to experience pure nature are right in Virginia Beach. Thus trips can be booked on the Atlantic, in order to observe dolphins, sea turtles and perhaps even a few humpback or fin whales. You can also swim, surf, hike, bike and paddle in a kayak.
